Minimum Wage 2026
$16.90 / hour statewide
Increased from $16.50 on Jan 1, 2026. Fast food workers: $20/hr (AB 1228). Healthcare workers: $18.63-$24/hr (SB 525). Many cities are higher: SF, LA, Emeryville. Always apply the highest rate - state, city, or federal.
Daily Overtime (CA Labor Code 510)
1.5x after 8 hrs/day ยท 2x after 12 hrs/day
Unique to California. Federal law only requires 1.5x after 40 hrs/week. Work 9 hours Monday and you earn 1 hour of overtime even if you only work 36 hours total. All hours on the 7th consecutive day: 1.5x for first 8 hrs, 2x after that.

Strictest rule in the US. All wages including accrued vacation must be paid on the last day. Employers who pay late face waiting-time penalties: one day of wages for every day late, up to 30 days (CA Labor Code 201, 203).

If you give at least 72 hours notice: final check on last day. If you quit without notice: employer has 72 hours. Accrued vacation must be included - California bans "use it or lose it" vacation policies.
