What SDI gives you back

California Payroll Laws - What Every Worker Needs to Know

California has the strongest worker protections in the United States, with requirements that go significantly beyond federal law. These are verified 2026 figures from the California DIR and Labor Code.

Minimum Wage 2026

$16.90 / hour statewide

Increased from $16.50 on Jan 1, 2026. Fast food workers: $20/hr (AB 1228). Healthcare workers: $18.63-$24/hr (SB 525). Many cities are higher: SF, LA, Emeryville. Always apply the highest rate - state, city, or federal.

Daily Overtime (CA Labor Code 510)

1.5x after 8 hrs/day ยท 2x after 12 hrs/day

Unique to California. Federal law only requires 1.5x after 40 hrs/week. Work 9 hours Monday and you earn 1 hour of overtime even if you only work 36 hours total. All hours on the 7th consecutive day: 1.5x for first 8 hrs, 2x after that.
