Why Results May Differ from Your Actual Paycheck

Our calculator uses simplified federal and state tax models. Your actual paycheck withholding may differ for many reasons, including but not limited to:

  • W-4 elections: Additional withholding amounts, multiple jobs adjustments, or dependent credits on your W-4
  • Local/city taxes: Some cities (New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, etc.) impose additional local income taxes not modeled here
  • State-specific deductions: Many states have their own standard deduction amounts, personal exemptions, or credits not fully captured
  • Pre-tax benefits: Employer-sponsored health insurance, dental, vision, commuter benefits, and other pre-tax deductions reduce taxable wages
  • Pay period rounding: Payroll systems apply withholding tables that may produce slightly different results than our annual-to-period conversion
  • Mid-year tax changes: Legislative changes enacted after our last data update
  • Supplemental wages: Bonuses and commissions may be withheld at a flat 22% federal supplemental rate rather than your marginal rate
  • State reciprocity agreements: If you live in one state and work in another, special rules may apply

Tax Data Accuracy

We strive to keep our tax rate data current and accurate for the 2026 tax year. We compile our data from IRS publications, official state revenue department websites, and established tax research sources. However, tax laws change, and there may be a lag between legislative changes and our data updates. We cannot guarantee that all data is complete or current at the time of your use.
